Fig is the only commercially important fruit-bearing plant among about 800 species included in the fig genus, which is included in the mulberry family. It is rich in Vitamins A, B1 and B2, manganese and potassium, magnesium, copper, iron and phosphorus. High potassium level and low sodium level provide relief to people with hypertension. Figs contain pectin, a soluble fiber known to lower cholesterol levels.
